Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons ghee
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 cup brown sugar or jaggery
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • A pinch of cardamom

Directions

  • Combine grated coconut and jaggery in a pan.
  • Keep this mixture on low heat and keep stirring until it thickens and leaves the sides of the pan.
  • Add nutmeg and cardamom.
  • Mix well and keep aside to cool.

Prepare Modak

  • In a deep dish, boil water, add salt, ghee and flour and mix well.
  • Keep stirring until it starts to thicken.
  • Remove the dough into another container, knead it, add more ghee if needed. It should be a soft, pliable dough.
  • Make lemon-size balls of the dough, flatten them between two sandwich bags. Grease the bags so that the dough does not stick to them.
  • Put a spoonful of the filling onto the dough and seal it. Finish the dough and the filling in a similar manner.
  • Put the dumplings in a muslin cloth and steam them for 12 minutes.
